Disappointment with Telligent
A few years back, I went out in search of a .NET-based forums product and found the then-awesome CommunityServer application. I built a couple of corporate intranet sites on the platform, and then built a new personal site for myself on it.
The problem is that Telligent steadily moved away from the small-to-mid-sized customer and continued to embrace the high-volume clients. Pricing steadily increased, and much of the oft-promised simplicity in subsequent versions never manifested itself.
Finally, they released the Graffiti CMS product which was supposed to provide the flexibility and simplicity that smaller customers needed. Although there was some noticeable ease of use, and the pricing was a lot more palatable than that of the CommunityServer product, Graffiti soon began to lose developer attention. The forums are now a ghost-town, not counting the inevitable complaints about a lack of support and communication. Also, there are numerous postings on blogs and forums expressing either concern about the state of Telligent and its products, or making plans to go in another direction.
I’m looking at a few CMS products myself, although I need them to be relatively lightweight, and easy to deploy onto a shared web hosting environment. I’ll be testing various products over the next few weeks.
Let’s see how it goes. It’s a shame that it had to come to this, really.
