Still waiting for Vista SP1
It's always something. On Sunday, I was pretty hyped up about the fact that Service Pack 1 for Vista was very near release, but that has been deflated by the realization that Microsoft is going to hold off on actually making the code available March.
Mind you, the code is already finalized, but they're concerned that some devices will require an updated driver installation process to function properly. And, as a result, they're putting a process into place that will allow them to detect which users have the affected drivers, and not provide the Service Pack to them until they have the updated driver code.
Okay, so give them some kudos for cautiousness, especially with all the flack they take for Vista size and performance.
Now, contrary to some of the reports I have seen, the issue is NOT with the actual drivers themselves, but with the installation code for the drivers. There's this misperception that there are very limited drivers for Vista, and while there are still many more drivers available for Windows XP (which is to be expected with a 5+ year head start in deployment), there are more than enough drivers available for both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista, and they are more stable than many of the XP drivers which are out there. This is due to the more stringent driver certification process in Vista.
Anyhoo, I have to wait a little while longer than I had desired to get my hands on the production edition of Service Pack 1 for Vista...
