Can Microsoft Learn from This?
Some days it seems like Microsoft still has a lot to learn about being a team player on a global stage where customers and regulators are interested in open standards and interoperability.
They recently got spanked with both the ISO and the IEC while lobbying to get their OpenXML document format established as a global, open standard. In short, many of the members of both standards bodies felt that Microsoft was too aggressive in attempting to rally support for their format. It almost felt like another exercise of monopoly powers.
Microsoft is going to have to quickly learn how to use all that vaunted marketing muscle in ways that don't irritate the people it needs to persuade and influence as it endeavors to ensure that it will be a viable player in an open world.
Hopefully, for their sakes, they'll learn quickly and adapt.
Transparency is a good thing.
