The Great Outdoors
This summer, in addition to a vacation at Cape May with my extended family, we also went to Shepherd Lake twice (in June and August), and we had our annual church camp-out at Stokes State Forest. All in all, we had ourselves some good times this summer.
The past few times we've gone to Shepherd Lake, I've rented row boats, which has proved to be a great deal of fun. This time, I went for the canoes, and that proved to be a bit more challenging. I also tried a kayak with my wife, who lasted just a few minutes before deciding that she wanted to ride in something a bit further away from the water!
Still, the whole kayak experience peaked our interest, so we're thinking of getting a kayak of our own. As with any hobby, it seems that there's a whole lot more to making a purchase than first meets the eye. Since it's just a starter craft, however, we're not going to get carried away with anything extravagant, but we're going to try out an inflatable. (I had no idea until this past Sunday that there was even any such thing as an inflatable kayak!)
We're going to start with the Sea Eagle 330 and see how things go from there. We're also considering white-water rafting for next year's summer of family fun agenda. Over the past 3 or 4 years, we have moved away from the whole amusement park thing, and gone totally into the nature/outdoors thing, and we have found that the kids just love it. Plus, it costs less overall.
We still hope to get one more activity in before the official end of summer, and it might involve the Sea Eagle...
