A Brief Look Inside the Vista Kernel

Mark Russinovich has provided another great series of "Inside Windows" articles, with his postings on TechNet.

Part one dealt with:

  • Thread priority and scheduling
  • File-based symbolic links
  • Canceling I/O operations

Part two, which is linked above, deals with:

  • Memory management
  • Startup and shutdown
  • Power management

You can see that there's quite a bit going on under the covers that is different from previous versions.  Some of these benefits come right out of the box, but the real benefits will start to take place once third party vendors start taking advantage of this new functionality in the areas of API for service startup and shutdown.
