The Future of Community Server: v3.0
Note: I originally published this on Tuesday, but something went wrong, and the post was generating an error when anyone viewed it, but not when I edited it. I had to recreate it.
Telligent is starting to provide some more information about Community Server 3.0, which is currently scheduled for release in Q1 2007. Codenamed "Calypso", this release will only run on ASP.NET 2.0, which poses no problems for me, as I recently went through the trouble of upgrading my site to run on .NET 2.0.
I'm looking forward to the improvements to the skinning/themes engine, but I'd also like to see some functionality available for handling various imports scenarios, such as RSS configuration, and also some exports, such as forum and folder permissions.
Here is my current CS 3.0 wish-list:
- Cloning existing entries with Link Lists, Blog Mirroring settings, etc
- Cloning permissions between Forums and Folders
- Bulk tagging of items in the File and Photo galleries
- Bulk changes to other gallery fields such as Descriptions
- Be able to jump to first unread message in a given thread
- Make it easy to import blogs from other platforms
- Changes related to Skinning/Themes:
- Control layout options for the various applications (Forums, Blogs, Galleries).
- Control certain types of options, such as how many posts show up on the main blog pages, or where ads show up on each of the pages.
- Change the order of items that show up on a given page or section within the various applications.
- Change or replace the images that go along with a theme.
- Separate the theme settings from the code elements of the website in such a way that upgrades to CS which add new functionality will simply inherit the themes that are in use, or simply require that the Theme Editor be run to add the new elements to the existing theme.
- Create themes for the entire set of applications, and in such a way that they can be imported/exported and shared
- Allow users to make some limited visual changes to enhance their own experience on the site.
Most of these were taken from a variety of Community Server threads that I participated in. BTW, did I mention how much I love tags?
